There will be no newsletter next week as Hans will be on GOBA.

Division 2 meeting.

President Ken Rosengarten along with Ruth Link, Linda May, Teresa Smith, Marjorie Stachler and Hans Rehrmann attended the Division 2 meeting in Delphos. The Delphos club outdid itself, as usual, by being gracious hosts and serving a sumptuous meal and liquid refreshments.

Lt. Governor Linda Steinbrunner reminded all clubs that each club should consider donating a basket (approximate value $50 to $100) to the "Basket Room" at the Ohio District Convention in Lima.

Past Lt. Governor and current Division 2 Project Eliminate Chair Denny Elwer gave a short speech on Project Eliminate.

Past Lt. Governor George Doyle spoke on Service Leadership Programs.

Lt. Governor-Elect Jeff Schulman of the Ada Club gave a few remarks.

Finally the Kiwanis International Campaign Director for Project Eliminate, Jason Pinkstaff, gave a speech which most of us could not really hear due to the fact that the wind was trying its best to blow us all away.

The next Division 2 meeting will be in September in Coldwater. The exact date to be yet announced.

Program.

Dave Smith introduced his guest, County Commissioner Jerry Laffin.

County Commissioner, Jerry Laffin.

Jerry talked about the various things the commissioners are responsible for. He gave a breakdown of  the fiscal year 2013 appropriations which are available at their web site.

He also spoke about the groundbreaking for the Ferguson plumbing distribution center.

The largest U.S. distributor of plumbing supplies is opening a giant distribution center east of the city.

Ferguson - which earns $9.7 billion a year in sales - plans to build a nearly 400,000-square-foot facility along state Route 29 at the corner of Harris Road.

The company has vowed to create 70 new full-time jobs at the 77-acre site along the four-lane highway where several years ago an ethanol plant was proposed and later scrubbed. The land is owned by Mercer Energy.

Mercer County Commissioner Jerry Laffin said Ferguson's arrival is the biggest new company development in the county since Celina Aluminum Precision Technology opened its doors nearby more than 20 years ago.

Ferguson is North America's leading supplier of construction-related products and services, such as plumbing supplies, heating and cooling equipment, fireplaces and appliances, lighting, tools and fire protection equipment. The company's CEO is Frank W. Roach.

Ferguson is owned by Wolseley of Newport, Va., and has 11 other distribution centers across the country; the closest are in Virginia and Iowa. It also boasts 300 showrooms in the U.S.
Ferguson employs about 18,000 associates in nearly 1,300 locations in North and Central America. According to the company's profile, it's ranked the third-largest distributor of heating and cooling equipment and second largest within the waterworks industry.

Last fall county commissioners approved a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant to extend water and sewer service from Celina to Harris Road and improve roadways under the name Project Ventilate. The infrastructure project is estimated to cost $1,150,000.

Additional funds for the infrastructure project will come from an Ohio Department of Transportation grant ($150,000), a state roadwork grant ($200,000), the county's economic development agency ($300,000) and a revolving loan.

Ebbing said Ferguson's commitment to the area isn't just a win for Mercer County.

"It's a win for the region and the state," he said.
He plans on helping the company grow for years to come in the same way his office supports all existing businesses, he said.
"That includes helping them find employees through our (online) Hometown Opportunity program," Ebbing said. "They'll need logistics people, distributors, accountants ... a wide variety of skilled workers."

During a following question and answer session Hans Rehrmann asked if there were plans for extending city water to the Menchofer Woods housing complex since the city has plans to bring water to the ODOT garage. Jerry said that, unlike sewers where everyone is required to hook up if made available, the hook-up to water is voluntary. Only if the majority of residents will hook up would it be feasible to do so.

Kiwanis Education.

12. The Kiwanis motto, “We Build,” was adopted in 1920. It was proposed by Roe Fulkerson, first editor of the Kiwanis Magazine, who later said, “God inspired me to write those two words—We Build. I am prouder of them than any other accomplishment in my life.”

Quotes.
