Meeting.

President Rosengarten opened the meeting in the traditional manner. Happy/Sad Dollars were collected.

Program.

Ruth Link introduced today's speaker, Dave Kaiser, the Mercer County Ohio Treasurer.
Dave spoke about his background. He was a math teacher for 34 years before his current job as the county treasurer. His main job is the collection of real estate taxes. His office collects an average of $37 Million per year. He is also the county banker as he watches over and average of 500 funds. The County Auditor, however, controls the disbursement of those funds. In addition to his other duties, the treasurer is also the chief investment officer. The State controls what to invest and where to invest it. It is mainly in Certificates of Deposit (CD's). People who do not or cannot pay their taxes will be charged interest. This can be avoided by contacting the treasurer's office and using a deferred payment plan.

Kiwanis Education.

74. US Kiwanians cannot claim Kiwanis dues as a personal tax deduction. However, Kiwanis dues may qualify as a deductible business expense when a business pays the costs of Kiwanis membership for an employee. Such a business deduction must also meet the “ordinary and necessary” test and other requirements for deductible business expenses. Kiwanians should consult a qualified tax adviser on all tax questions.

Quotable Quotes.

finished.
